POSEIDON ADVENTURE (1972) 2.00 [D. RONALD NEAME] 1975-01-01

One of a series of "disaster films" from the early to mid-seventies, all of which were improbable, melodramatic, and utterly devoid of emotional interest. The usual all-star cast is featured here, including Borgnine and Lindly, but the script is cliche' ridden and predictable, and even the special effects are rather limp. There are a lot better ways to spend an evening. Oddly enough, Neame is the director of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. [897]

Carol Lynley, GENE HACKMAN, EARNEST BORGNINE, SHELLY WINTERS

BABE (1975) 6.00 [D. UNKNOWN] 1975-01-01

Biopic about Babe Zachias Dedirikson (sp?) probably the best female American athlete of this century, and her battle with cancer. Above average. [873]

SUSAN CLARKE

COUSIN, COUSINE (1975) 7.50 [D. JEAN-CHARLES TACCHELLA] 1975-01-01

Charming, low-key French film about cousins that fall for each other. Likeable and direct. [639]

Paper Moon (1973) 8.20 [D. Peter Bogdanovich] 1975-01-01

Tatum O'Neal's remarkable performance-- and Madeline Kahn's-- anchors this familiar tale (see "Little Miss Marker") with the pleasant spin of Addie being in on the larceny, rather than a moralistic correction to the major characters. The poverty and corruption of the 1930's is not soft-pedalled either, and the black and white photography works for it. Moses is a shyster selling bibles to unsuspecting recent widows (claiming that their late husbands ordered them, monogramed, especially for their lovely wives). When dropping in to an ex- girlfriend's funeral, he is dragooned into transporting little Addie, her seven-year-old daughter, to Missouri to live with an aunt. Addie shows exceptional skill in contributing to the bible frauds and sticks around while Moses gets even more ambitious. The story is that the filming of "Paper Moon" was a nightmare because Tatum O'Neal required up to 30 or 40 takes of particular scenes to get it right, to make it look effortless (which seemed to impress the Academy which gave her a supporting actress Oscar). Also said that Ryan O'Neal hit Tatum when he found out she had been nominated while he was not. Madeline Kahn also received a nomination and rightly observed that Addie was a lead role-- not supporting. Decent follow-up to "Last Picture Show", and Polly Platt was deeply involved sustaining the question of who really was responsible for Bogdanovich's success. [576]

QUEEN OF SPADES (1949) 8.00 [D. THOROLD DICKINSON] 1975-01-01

Biting drama about a Russian Officer obsessed with learning secret of winning at cards from an elderly spinster, going so far as to scandalize the funeral by peeking into the coffin for her secrets. Great twist at the end, stunning, bitter climax. [540]

IS PARIS BURNING (1966) 7.00 [D. RENE CLEMENT] 1975-01-01

I can't think of much about it. Vaguely interesting, and star-studded. [414]

L'AVVENTURA (1960) 7.00 [D. MICHELANGELO ANTONIONI] 1975-01-01

I don't remember much about it, though it vaguely reminds me of Red, by the same director. Somewhat aimless. [386]

SPENCER'S MOUNTAIN (1963) 7.00 [D. DELMER DAVES] 1975-01-01

Fonda and Maureen O'Hara as heads of the clan. Compares favourably to the Waltons, a tv series based on the same story, but often regarded as sentimental by critics. "Family entertainment", in both the best and worst sense of the word. [351]

Sailor Who Fell From Grace With the Sea (1975) 7.00 [D. JOHN LEWIS CARLINO] 1975-08-01

Sid and I saw this out west somewhere. Very sexy scene, particularly of masturbation by Miles. [300]

Joe (1970) 8.00 [D. JOHN G. AVILDSEN] 1975-01-01

Peter Boyle is outstanding as blue collar red-neck hard-hat. [256]

Patton (1970) 8.00 [D. FRANKLIN SCHAFFNER] 1975-01-01

Brilliant, exciting dramatization. Scott is absolutely riveting, obscene, aggravating. [221]

Blazing Saddles (1974) 6.00 [D. MEL BROOKS] 1975-01-01

From the same director as "The Producers"? Hard to believe. [125]

Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz (1974) 8.20 [D. TED KOTCHEFF] 1975-01-01

I think I saw this in high school, or first years of college. Well acted, sometimes hilarious, and good story. Tightly directed. Warden and Randy Quaid and Dreyfus are good. Dreyfus playes Duddy, a young Jewish boy out to get some land, to please his grandfather, and to be somebody. On the way, he uses and abuses almost everyone he comes in contact with. [104]

Don't Look Back (1968) 7.00 [D. RICHARD LESTER] 1975-01-01

Strange, haunting film, but I'm not sure it succeeds. Needs to be seen again. Highly rated by critics. [82]

Robe (1953) 5.00 [D. HENRY KOSTER] 1975-01-01

Pompous boring old fart of a movie about a centurion, Richard Burton, who is in charge of Christ's execution, and subsequently becomes a Christian. Over-acted, over-produced, just plain awful all over. In fact, the conclusion may be one of the most pompously stupid in Hollywood history. [70]

Act of the Heart (1970) 5.00 [D. Paul Almond] 1975-01-01

Some reviewers call this fascinating and rate it 3 stars. I don't find it very memorable. Most agree the conclusion, self-immolation, was outrageously inappropriate. Bujolds is enjoyable, as always. Sutherland seems to be looking for his place, but is always interesting to watch. Generally, reviews are very mixed. [4]
