Crazy John Cassavetes

 

It is rare than an artist in any particular discipline creates a work so breathtakingly different from established forms and conventions that it seems to redefine the possibilities of the art form itself.  Picasso, Stravinsky, Dylan...  John Cassavetes?

I'm not even sure his films are great.  They are breathtaking, shocking, astounding.  Are they great?  I'm not sure. 

When a director allows actors to improvise a scene, we can usually trust that what will emerge will be something that resembles a well-scripted, rehearsed, edited scene.  So, in fact, we're not really working with improvisation at all, but, rather, controlled
